چکیده

Studies have found little association between cholesterol and overall stroke risk, but this could be attributable to diVerent relations for haemorrhagic and ischaemic stroke. Stroke mortality data from prospective studies cannot usually be divided into stroke subtypes. We have therefore analysed stroke based on hospital admissions, obtained by computerised linkage with acute hospital discharges in Scotland for a large prospective cohort study.

The relation between adult height and haemorrhagic and ischaemic stroke in the Renfrew/Paisley study.

Adult height is a useful marker of fetal growth, growth and nutrition in childhood and childhood infections. Studies reporting inverse associations between height and stroke therefore provide support for the hypothesis that exposures acting in early life are important determinants of risk of stroke. 2 However, few studies have been able to examine the association between height and stroke subty...

The relation between questions indicating transient ischaemic attack and stroke in 20 years of follow up in men and women in the Renfrew/Paisley Study.

STUDY OBJECTIVE Transient ischaemic attack (TIA) is often a precursor to stroke, so identification of people experiencing TIA could assist in stroke prevention by indicating those at high risk of stroke who would benefit most from intervention for other stroke risk factors. The objective of this study was to investigate whether answers to a simple questionnaire for TIA could predict the occurre...

Aggressive statin treatment, very low serum cholesterol levels and haemorrhagic stroke: is there an association?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW To assess the potential association between haemorrhagic stroke and achieving very low serum cholesterol levels with aggressive statin treatment. RECENT FINDINGS The Stroke Prevention by Aggressive Reduction in Cholesterol Levels (SPARCL) study showed a reduction in both fatal and nonfatal stroke but an increase in the risk for haemorrhagic stroke during high-dose atorvastat...

Comparison of risk factors for stroke incidence and stroke mortality in 20 years of follow-up in men and women in the Renfrew/Paisley Study in Scotland.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The aim of this study was to relate risk factors in middle-aged men and women to stroke incidence (defined by having a hospital discharge with a main diagnosis of stroke) and compare this with the associations between risk factors and stroke mortality. METHODS In the early to mid-1970s, when they were 45 to 64 years of age, 7052 men and 8354 women from the Renfrew/Paisl...
